The concept of DNA as a molecule whose biological expression is an extension of its chemical structure offers an excellent opportunity for biologists and chemists to work together in the development of curricular activities to teach the subject. We believe that this approach is highly effective in promoting deep conceptual understanding of the subject matter. It is congruent with the recommendations of the Bio2010 report published by the National Academies of Sciences that states: "Connections between biology and the other scientific disciplines need to be developed and reinforced so that interdisciplinary thinking and work become second nature". We report on the development and implementation of an immersion unit on biotechnology for high school teachers with activities centered on the concept of DNA structure and its expression.
